Zain announced a parternship with Western Union last Tuesday, and Safaricom already offers transfers from the UK through its M-Pesa service. MTN Uganda is the latest MTN country to add mobile transfer services.

Yesterday, MTN Rwanda announced that it would be launching MTN’s Mobile Money product by the end of the year.

Recent surveys in Kenya showed that 52 percent of all money transfers were being done through M-Pesa, the local name for Mobile Money Transfer and 93 percent of the people surveyed were happy with the system because it gave removed so many barriers and did not limit the amount one could send.

That’s an incredible statistic. 52% of all money transfers in Kenya, using a system that’s only used by 6 million people out of 35 million. MTN has already launched similar services in Ghana, the Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The South African company is working on similar services for the Middle East.
